The Inside Out Franchise consists of two sequels which are animated Films by Pixar, originally for children, which beautifully tries to show what emotions are and how they work. Inside Out 2 is the sequel of Inside Out which is based on the same theme but the second part is a little more intricate as compared to its first version. The story revolves around Riley who has grown up and is thirteen years now.
There are a lot of things that Inside Out 2 has shown that capture what each individual goes through in his life. How different emotions catch up and have such a tight hold on ourselves. Both films successfully manage to explain and express how hard emotions like anxiety and sadness work.
2. Dear Zindagi | Mental Health Movies
Dear Zindagi aka Dear Life is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Gauri Shinde.
Kiara, the protagonist in Dear Zindagi starts going to therapy. This might be the first Bollywood film where they kind of introduce therapy and they do it in such a nice way. The movie is not only about how beautifully Kiara transforms into a more secure person and tries to mend her relationship with her parents and she starts understanding herself better but also about her traumatic childhood experiences. She reaches a breakthrough point in therapy where she can process that.
It was beautiful and wholesome to watch her so open and vulnerable. For her to take the first step towards therapy was what stayed with us. That step is so important, that almost could be a life-changing moment for so many people who suffer from issues related to mental health.
3. The Perks Of Being a Wallflower | Mental Health Movies
How can one find hope following trauma or devastation? How do you respond to the suffering of those you love?
Stephen Chbosky’s first book, PERKS, or THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, was released in 1999. It follows the adoption of Charlie, an introverted writer, into the Wallflowers, a supportive group of friends during his freshman year of high school. He experiences the highs and lows of his first year and discovers what it is to be honest about one’s desires, feelings, and experiences.
The film explores several themes that are relevant to many aspects of adolescence, including discovering love and companionship, recovering from prior trauma, acceptance (of oneself, of others, and from others), and mental health. There have been amazing performances by Emma Watson and Logan Lerman, but Paul Rudd has been exceptionally good and is among the best.

4. Silver Linings Playbook | Mental Health Movies
The incredible journey that is Silver Linings Playbook develops like a melody of unfiltered feelings. The film’s genius is found in the amazing performances that give its characters life, as well as in its heartwarming story. The cast, led by Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, is nothing short of phenomenal.
It demonstrates that the extent of our trauma and suffering is determined by ourselves. Sometimes, in the face of uncertainty and dread, we turn to someone else—a partner—in the hopes that they will save us and restore our sense of purpose in life.
But when this person disappoints us—which is inevitable when one develops an unhealthy dependence on them—we crumble. We fail to perform the most basic things, like let go of the past, forgive ourselves and others, or simply enjoy life—actions that would help us maintain positive relationships with both ourselves and other people. Pat doesn’t have any heavenly revelations from Tiffany; instead, she only stands by him until he realizes that he needs to heal himself.

5. Little Miss Sunshine | Mental Health Movies
What happens if your dreams are not achieved? What happens if one’s perfectionism becomes excessive?
Little Miss Sunshine is a 2006 American tragic comedy that was directed by Valerie Faris, making her directorial debut, and Jonathan Dayton, based on a screenplay by Michael Arndt. Together with Abigail Breslin, Alan Arkin, Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Paul Dano, and others, the ensemble cast of the movie portrays members of a dysfunctional family who send their youngest member, Breslin, to compete in a child beauty contest.
This movie reminds us that life isn’t about chasing happiness it’s about finding happiness along the way by accepting the people around you accepting your failures and shortcomings, accepting your loneliness, accepting your flaws, and accepting yourself, and we can’t think of a more important message than that.
This film illustrates so accurately the 5 stages of grief—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, in different orders. One of our favorite scenes is when Dwayne breaks his silence and yells at everybody and then Olive just silently comforts him very briefly and then gets up and apologizes to everyone. That scene says that just a little bit of pure, unconditional love can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

6. A Beautiful Mind | Mental Health Movies
A Beautiful Mind (2001) is a film by Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard. The focus of this film is Dr. John Nash, a mathematician who was awarded the Nobel Prize and who also has paranoid schizophrenia. In this biopic, Ron Howard skillfully employs extremely simple yet inventive filming techniques to portray John Nash’s delusions and distort reality.
The story, which explores schizophrenia, is tragic and enjoyable, and it ends beautifully. Surviving a life-threatening illness and going on to lead a prosperous afterlife have advantages. John Nash is a prime example of why mental illness should not be feared, but rather recognized and treated.
