— title: “BetterLYF Alternatives in India 2026: 7 Honest Options to Consider” slug: betterlyf-alternatives ” category: Online Therapy
By Sakshi Shah, Co-founder, GoodLives. GoodLives is one of the alternatives listed in this piece, so please read our placement in that light.
Last re-checked: November 2026. Prices and features change often, so we refresh this page every few months.
If you have been using BetterLYF for chat counselling or are weighing apps like BetterLYF for a lower-cost first step, this piece is for you. We will tell you plainly what BetterLYF is good at, where readers often get stuck with it, and seven India-first alternatives worth considering in 2026.

Who this comparison is for
- You have used BetterLYF chat and liked the ease of it, but the replies started feeling short or scripted.
- You want to move from quick venting to deeper work with one therapist over a few months.
- You are not sure whether the counsellor you spoke with is an RCI-registered clinical psychologist.
- You want the same affordable entry point BetterLYF offers, from a provider with clearer credentials.
- You are reading for a sibling, partner or parent who tried the chat tier and wants to try something else.
If you are in acute distress right now, please pause. Both are free and staffed by trained volunteers. Comparisons can wait.
What BetterLYF is, honestly
BetterLYF is a chat-first online counselling platform in India, built around a low barrier to entry and quick access to a counsellor. Many first-time users land there because the entry pricing is lower than most video-first platforms and the chat window feels less daunting than a video call with a stranger.
Three things it does genuinely well:
- Low barrier to entry. Starting a conversation is simple. You pick a plan, drop a message, and someone replies. For a reader who has spent weeks talking themselves out of therapy, this is often what finally gets them to try.
- Chat-first feels comfortable to many first-timers. Video with a stranger can be a lot in week one. Writing a message is less exposing, and reading replies at your own pace helps if you process things slowly.
- Affordable entry pricing with 24 by 7 positioning. BetterLYF markets round-the-clock availability and sits at the lower end of India chat counselling. For a student or someone paying out of pocket, the entry tier is reachable.
Three honest gaps readers raise in reviews and in our own intake calls:
- Counsellor-weighted, not RCI-only. Not every listed professional on BetterLYF is an RCI-registered clinical psychologist. The pool is mixed, with counsellors from different backgrounds. For clinical work on anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD, bipolar or complex grief, you want to confirm RCI credentials and ask who supervises the counsellor.
- Variable session depth. The chat format works for a lot of situations, but it can feel light for the deeper work. Readers tell us the first few replies are warm, then follow-ups start feeling shorter or more formulaic, especially on busier evenings.
- Reviews cite short or formulaic replies on the entry tier. Public reviews flag reply times, scripted answers and upselling pressure on the lowest tier. None of this is unique to BetterLYF, but it is honest to say it out loud.
None of this means BetterLYF is a bad platform. It means BetterLYF is a certain shape of platform. If any of the three gaps above describes why you are reading this page, the alternatives below are worth your time.
The honest line nobody tells you
The app is not the counsellor. The app is a chat window, a payment system, and sometimes a video option. The person on the other side is the counsellor, and the fit between you and that person is almost everything.
A warm, well-trained counsellor on a basic app will help you more than a tired one on a slick platform. So when you compare BetterLYF with the options below, compare the professionals you can meet on each one, not just the homepage copy and the chat screenshots.
Red flags to spot on any platform
Any one of these is a reason to pause and ask more questions:
- The counsellor’s profile does not list an RCI number or a named supervisor. For clinical psychology work, this matters.
- “Instant match” with a counsellor before any intake call or screening.
- Claims of an “AI therapist” or “AI counsellor” that can replace human care. AI tools can support therapy. They cannot practise clinical psychology in India.
- Upfront packages of 10 or 20 sessions before you have met the therapist once.
- No cancellation terms in writing, or a policy that keeps all of your money if you miss one session.
- Pricing that only appears after you share your phone number.
- Promises of a “cure”, a “fix” or a specific recovery timeline.
- Replies that feel copy-pasted. Trust that gut feeling and ask for a different counsellor or a different platform.
Good platforms are usually boring about these things: clear credentials on each profile, a short intake step, pay-as-you-go or small packs, and written cancellation terms.
Not sure whether chat counselling or video therapy fits you better? Share two or three lines about what you are going through, and we will tell you honestly which route is likely to help. Book a Session.
7 BetterLYF alternatives worth knowing
1. GoodLives
What it is: An India-first online therapy platform with RCI-registered clinical psychologists and supervised counsellors. Intake is a short form plus a free 15-minute discovery call before you are matched. Sessions run on a secure video window, open-ended by default, 50 minutes each. Trusted by 500K+ people.
Who it fits best: Readers who tried BetterLYF chat, found it helpful at first but want more clinical depth, and are ready for a 50-minute conversation with one therapist each week. Also for anyone who wants to see RCI credentials on a profile before paying.
Credentials: All clinical psychologists on GoodLives are RCI-registered. Counsellors work under clinical supervision. Credentials appear on each therapist’s profile.
Modalities: Video sessions, 50 minutes. Chat and audio on request.
Fee range (as of November 2026): Current pricing lives on the booking page. We do not quote it in prose because it changes. The band is designed to sit within affordable range for RCI-registered clinical psychology in India. See our pricing page.
Languages: English, Hindi and several regional languages depending on the therapist. The directory lets you filter by language.
Honest gap: We do not run a 24 by 7 chat-only tier the way BetterLYF does. If what you want is a quick vent at 2 AM over text, our shape will feel heavier. Our sessions are longer, our intake takes a few extra minutes, and the therapy is video-first.
Where GoodLives fits better than BetterLYF: RCI-first clinical rigour at affordable rates, with 50-minute sessions and a therapist you can stay with. If the BetterLYF chat started feeling short or scripted and you want depth without jumping to premium pricing, this is the shape that changes.
2. YourDost
What it is: One of the oldest India online counselling platforms, chat-first by history, with a broad directory of experts across career, relationships, parenting, academics and clinical categories.
Who it fits best: Readers whose college or employer already offers YourDost as a free benefit, those who want a chat-first entry rather than video, and anyone who wants to compare many profiles.
Credentials: A mixed pool, similar to BetterLYF. Some experts are RCI-registered clinical psychologists; others are counsellors and life coaches. Filter each profile’s listed credential before you book.
Modalities: Chat, audio and video.
Fee range (as of November 2026): Chat-tier pricing is among the lower on this list and broadly comparable to BetterLYF. Senior-expert video sits closer to the mid-range.
Languages: English, Hindi and several regional languages.
Honest gap: The credential mix means variance in experience and depth between profiles, similar to BetterLYF. Some public reviews flag short sessions in the chat tier and occasional upselling pressure. For structured clinical work, you have to filter carefully.
Where YourDost fits better than BetterLYF: If your college or company offers YourDost free, the first few sessions are already paid for. The directory is bigger if you want to shop profiles. The experience is close in shape to BetterLYF, so it works as a sideways move at similar cost.
3. Amaha (ex-InnerHour)
Who it fits best: Readers who want structured programmes with a mobile-app layer, who may need medication alongside therapy, and who want in-house clinical teams rather than an open directory.
Credentials: In-house therapists and psychiatrists, RCI-registered where applicable. Credentials visible on profiles.
Modalities: Video, app, integrated psychiatry.
Fee range (as of November 2026): Sits on the upper end of India therapy pricing, especially for senior clinicians and premium programmes. The free self-help app is still available on its own.
Languages: English and Hindi primarily, with others depending on the therapist.
Honest gap: Price is higher than BetterLYF. The app-dependent workflow (mood logs, homework, daily prompts) feels like homework on top of therapy for some readers. Programme shape is not for everyone.
Where Amaha fits better than BetterLYF: Clinical depth, in-house psychiatry under one roof, and a real self-help app layer. If what felt thin on BetterLYF was the clinical rigour, Amaha is a clear step up, at a clear step up in price.
4. Mindtalk (by Cadabam’s)
What it is: Online and in-person therapy backed by Cadabam’s Hospitals in Bengaluru, with an in-house therapist model and structured programmes for conditions like anxiety, OCD, and child and adolescent care.
Who it fits best: Readers who want structured programmes but with a hospital-group pathway behind them, those near a Cadabam’s physical centre, and anyone who may need to step up to in-person care later.
Credentials: Clinical psychologists and counsellors employed in-house. Hospital-group backing joins online therapy with psychiatry and in-person care.
Modalities: Video, phone and in-person at centres.
Fee range (as of November 2026): Mid-range for therapy; higher-end programmes priced separately. Higher than BetterLYF’s chat tier.
Languages: English, Hindi, Kannada and others depending on the therapist.
Honest gap: The in-house model means less variety in therapist style than open directories. If one therapist is not the right fit, you may find fewer very different options to switch to. Not chat-first.
Where Mindtalk fits better than BetterLYF: For moderate to severe presentations where you may need in-person care or psychiatric follow-up later, a hospital-group pathway matters. BetterLYF is a chat-first entry; Mindtalk is a clinical pathway.
5. Rocket Health
What it is: A general online healthcare platform in India that offers therapy and psychiatry alongside other medical consultations.
Who it fits best: Readers who already use Rocket Health for other medical consults, who want 24 by 7 availability like BetterLYF but with a medical-grade pathway, or who want psychiatry to be as easy to book as a GP consult.
Credentials: Clinical psychologists, counsellors and psychiatrists are listed, with credentials on profiles. Check each professional’s qualifications before booking.
Modalities: Chat, audio and video; prescriptions available through psychiatry consults.
Fee range (as of November 2026): Varies by professional and session type. Therapy consults sit in a mid-range band, higher than BetterLYF chat but with named clinical credentials. Psychiatry consults are published on the booking flow.
Languages: English and Hindi, with others depending on the professional.
Honest gap: Because therapy sits inside a larger medical platform, the default experience feels more “consult” and less “ongoing relationship”. If you want long therapy with one person, be deliberate about booking the same therapist every week.
Where Rocket Health fits better than BetterLYF: 24 by 7 availability with named clinical and medical credentials, and psychiatry that is easier to book without a programme. If what you valued most about BetterLYF was round-the-clock access but you want clinical rigour behind it, Rocket Health is a closer fit than most.
6. Mpower, Lissun and Fortis Mental Health (worth knowing)
These are mental-health arms of larger hospital or foundation brands, not standalone chat platforms.
- Mpower is a well-known foundation and clinic chain with online counselling, structured programmes and a strong public-education presence.
- Lissun focuses on structured programmes, including maternal mental health and child and adolescent care.
- Fortis Mental Health connects you to psychiatrists and clinical psychologists through the Fortis Healthcare network, including inpatient care when needed.
Who they fit best: Readers who want the comfort of a known hospital or foundation brand, who want online therapy that can roll into in-person care at a specific city clinic, or who may need a joined-up pathway with inpatient support.
Fee range (as of November 2026): On the higher side, closer to private-clinic rates. Specific sub-specialties (child, trauma, perinatal) vary by city. Well above BetterLYF chat.
Where these fit better than BetterLYF: Clinical depth with in-person backup, hospital-grade pathway, and specialist sub-services (perinatal, child, trauma) that BetterLYF does not run. For complex or severe presentations, these have more fallback.
7. Free trained-listener lines: iCall and Tele-MANAS
Sometimes what you actually need is not a paid platform at all. It is one honest conversation with a trained listener for the hour you are in.
- Free. Trained counsellors.
- Free.
- Free.
- Free.
Who it fits best: Readers who used BetterLYF for one-off venting rather than long therapy. If the real pattern is “I need to say this to someone tonight”, these lines do that at no cost, with trained listeners who are not graded on your subscription tier.
Honest gap: Helplines are not therapy and not a substitute for a therapist. They are a safe first step for one difficult night, before you decide which paid route fits you.
Where free lines fit better than BetterLYF: Cost is zero, the listener is trained, and nobody is nudging you towards a package. For the specific use case of one-off venting, this is often the most honest match.
Want help picking? Share two or three lines about what you are going through, and we will tell you honestly whether GoodLives fits, whether another platform here would be better, or whether a free line is enough tonight. Book a Session.
How to pick, based on your actual situation
You just want a quick vent at 2 AM, without paying: A free line is the most honest match. No subscription, trained listener, no upsell.
You want to stay chat-first but with clearer credentials: Rocket Health runs a chat and audio tier with named clinical credentials. YourDost chat is also chat-first and sideways to BetterLYF in shape.
You want clinical rigour at an affordable price point: GoodLives is built for this. RCI-registered clinical psychologists, 50-minute sessions, open-ended therapy with one person, affordable rates. See our pricing page.
You want a structured programme with a mobile-app layer: Amaha or Mindtalk. These are the two closest fits for a defined track with daily app support, at a higher price than BetterLYF.
You want integrated psychiatry on the same platform: Amaha, Rocket Health, Mindtalk and Fortis all offer therapy and psychiatry together. If the BetterLYF counsellor hinted that medication might help, this is where you ask.
You are dealing with trauma, PTSD, OCD, bipolar follow-up or complex grief: Insist on an RCI-registered clinical psychologist with real experience in that area. GoodLives, Amaha, Mindtalk and Fortis publish credentials clearly. Ask the therapist directly how many clients they have seen with your presenting issue.
You want Hindi or a regional language: GoodLives, YourDost and Mindtalk have strong regional-language coverage. Filter the directory by language before booking.
You want it to be insurance claimable: Check your insurer’s outpatient mental-health benefit under the Mental Healthcare Act 2017. Most insurers that reimburse require an RCI-registered clinical psychologist or an MBBS or MD psychiatrist. Platforms whose counsellors are not RCI-registered may not qualify.
You are a student on a very tight budget: If your college offers YourDost free, use that. Beyond it, free lines plus one monthly session on an affordable platform is the shape we have seen work. BetterLYF chat is cheap but often thin for ongoing clinical work.
You want to meet the therapist before you pay: GoodLives offers a free 15-minute discovery call. Some Mindtalk flows also include a screening step. This single feature removes the biggest barrier for first-timers.

What about BetterHelp and Talkspace?
They come up in every search, so it is worth saying plainly: they are not built for India.
- No RCI. BetterHelp and Talkspace credential their therapists against US and other Western licensing boards, not India’s RCI. For most Indian clients, this means your therapist is not registered to practise clinical psychology in India.
- Pricing in USD. Weekly or monthly subscriptions can work out to about Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 a month or more, usually well above BetterLYF and above most other India-first platforms.
- Cultural distance. Caste, joint-family dynamics, arranged-marriage context, workplace hierarchies, gender expectations: these shape how distress shows up in India, and a therapist with no India training may frame them in ways that do not quite land.
- Insurance. Indian health insurance that reimburses outpatient mental-health sessions usually requires an India-licensed professional.
If you are an Indian citizen living in India, we would almost always point you to an India-first platform. If you are a non-resident Indian living in a country where BetterHelp or Talkspace operates, that is a different question.
Legal and privacy, briefly
- Clinical psychology practice in India is regulated by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). An RCI number on a profile is verifiable on the RCI public register.
- Mental-health rights in India are set by the Mental Healthcare Act 2017, including the right to confidentiality.
- Your personal and session data is covered by the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 (DPDPA). You have the right to know how your data is stored, used and shared.
- This article is information, not medical advice. For a clinical opinion, speak to a licensed professional.
Our honest closing line
No alternative here is “the best for everyone”. BetterLYF works for a lot of readers who want a low-cost, chat-first first step and are not aiming at deep clinical work. The seven options above work better for other readers, depending on what you actually need: RCI-registered clinical rigour at an affordable rate, a structured programme, integrated psychiatry, a hospital pathway, or just a free line tonight.
No single alternative replaces BetterLYF for everyone. Different shapes serve different needs, and the question is which shape fits you.
If you have been on BetterLYF and want something different, pick the platform where you can meet a therapist before you pay, see RCI credentials clearly, and leave if the fit is not right. That is the whole point of all of this.
If you would like to start with us, book a free 15-minute discovery call on the GoodLives booking page. If a different platform on this list fits you better based on what you have read, we would still rather you start somewhere than keep comparing.
